Summary & Key Events
The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives a very peaceful and uneventful life. This however changes when Bilbo is visited by the wizard Gandalf who tricks him into hosting a party of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield whose grandfather was the last king of the Lonely Mountain. The dwarves are on a quest to reclaim their home and its vast treasure from the dragon Smaug. Gandalf reveals to them a map showing a secret door into the Mountain and suggests that Bilbo join them. Bilbo is reluctant at first but after much debate with Gandalf he agrees to go.
During their trek across the Misty Mountains, the party is captured by a hoard of goblins and Bilbo is separated from the rest of the group. Lost in the tunnels, Bilbo comes across a strange ring and the creature Gollum. Bilbo discovers that the ring has the power of invisibility and uses it to escape Gollum and rejoin the dwarves. After coming out of the tunnels Gandalf leaves the group and the dwarves are captured by Wood-elves, Bilbo however escapes thanks to his magic ring and is able to rescue the dwarves which earns him their admiration and respect. Bilbo and the dwarves then come to a small village in the shadow of the Lonely Mountain called Lake-town where they were welcomed as the heroes that will finally defeat the dragon Smaug.
When the party arrives at the Lonely Mountain they find the secret door and Bilbo uses his ring to sneak inside; this awakens Smaug who then attacks Lake-town for aiding the intruders. During the attack one of the villagers spots a weakness in Smaug's armor and slays him.
The Lake-men along with the Wood-elves then march on the Lonely Mountain and demand a share of the dragon's treasure, Thorin refuses and soon an army of dwarves led by his cousin arrives. Gandalf re-appears and informs everyone that an army of Goblins and Wargs is marching to claim the treasure for themselves, this begins what is known as the Battle of the Five Armies.
